(1925-2006)
   Ecevit was a leftist but a strong Turkish nationalist who was twice prime minister of Turkey in the 1970s and again as the head of a three-party coalition from April 1999 until his smashing defeat in the 3 November 2002 national elections.
   He gained great popularity by his decision to successfully intervene in Cyprus in 1974. The moderate rightist Suleyman Demirel was Ecevit's longtime bitter rival, and their frequent alternating in power was seen by some as symbolizing Turkey's often unsuccessful domestic politics. Although both were banned from politics after the military coup of 1980, they eventually staged triumphal and popular returns. Ironically, they then worked together as president and prime minister. Ecevit argued that there was no Kurdish ethnic problem in Turkey, only an economic problem.
   He was married and also a poet, journalist, author, and translator. However, he never graduated from a university, a situation that prevented him from ever being considered for the post of Turkish president.
